people have a terrible habit of accepting false information as true because it fits their world view, regardless of whether that world view is accurate.

If you tell someone “water is poisonous”?

Most people would immediately dismiss that as untrue - after all, they probably drank some water, and didn’t get sick

But it’s not untrue, water is poisonous in a sufficient quantity. Most things on earth have a safe range, even things like cyanide. Water you need a lot of it to hit a lethal dose (unless you breathe it of course, but that’s different than poison)

And all the knowledge we’ve gained as a species is openly available to anyone who wants to know.

Yet there are still people who believe verifiably false things because it fits with how they want the world to be, rather than how it is

What’s a belief you hold that might not hold up to scrutiny? I’m sure we all have at least a dozen of them, and if someone could prove it was false, would you take the time to weigh the evidence l?

why not? There’s no harm in finding out other perspectives on things and maybe learning something new - or teaching something new

We, Christians, have already waved the white flag, lol, in that we say that we believe our beliefs on pure faith. What more do you want, lol?

I’m not harshing on Christians here, I’m more annoyed with far right politics bordering on authoritarian and fascist that seem to being growing more popular in the west

“Make America Great Again” was a pretty snazzy slogan, especially when by all accounts the US was doing the best it ever had, more jobs, less intolerance (still lots, but it was improving) - call Mexicans rapist, promise to build a wall, refuse to reject the support of the KKK, brag about banging porn stars, insult your base repeatedly and get cheered for it... and all of a sudden the closet racists feel safe to come out of the woodwork - the US is turning around a bit because of that, the wrong direction.

Politicians who say one thing, do another, and then brag they did what they promised - because they just assume their base will believe them - and they do.

    The world is getting dumber

But how am I supposed to know that it's wrong when I believe it's right? Someone else has to call me out on it or I've got to learn about the facts to lose the ignorance

You have an excellent point - you don’t know something is wrong until someone proves it.

I wonder how many of the truths I hold to be evident are actually wrong

Believing things that others claim as truths is what got #45 elected president of the US. After all his idiocy the loyal followers still believe.
