Do you think lotteries are a good thing?

Having acquired the knowledge to compute the probability of winning any particular lottery, I have generally scoffed and referred to them as a "fool's tax." I look at casino gambling the same way...no game is fair in the mathematical sense, and this is why casinos generally look like palaces.

But, I have seen my mother return from shopping, and she can barely wait to sit down and commence to scratching her tickets...she honestly reminds me of a drug addict getting high after being without for a while. But, it brings her happiness and hope even if I am sure she has paid dearly for it over the years, if it was all totaled up.

I have told her about the probability of winning, and how small it is, but she will say her chances of winning are better than if she didn't play at all. So, given that she isn't spending enough to harm herself, I have decided to just let her have at it without being any more of a buzzkill.

What are your thoughts on lotteries?

It does kind of make me sad to see people standing in line to by lottery tickets, and you can see by their appearance that they are very poor, and I have to wonder what essentials they and/or their families are going without because of the money they are spending on the lottery.

The proceeds from the state lotteries here in Florida go to education funding. When it was initially started, that was a big selling point to get people to vote for it. Everyone stupidly assumed it would augment state funding, but what happened is it simply replaced state funding.

It's something you should only spend money on if you're never going to miss all the money you've spent on it. I just think about what my parents have done - they spend $13 on lottery tickets twice per week and have been buying them for about 30 years. They've never won anything substantial ($200 was their biggest win ever) and I just imagine how much money they'd have tucked away if they had put all of that same money into a savings account all those years.

I'm sure the winners would tell you otherwise, but to me it's just a dumb idea for the average person when you could save or invest that same money for the future. The most I've ever done as far as lottery or gambling is gotten a few of those $1 scratch tickets just for the hell of it.

    Everyone's got their vices.

I don't play the lottery or gamble; istead I waste my money on cigarettes and marijuana.
I have friends that spend an exorbitant amount of money on their vehicles: rims, sound systems, lifts, lights, turbos, etc.
My brother, spends thousands of dollars on his computer systems.
Friends that work rotation two weeks on, two weeks off. Some of them vacation those two weeks.
    Others, junk food.

Hell, last summer I spent $1500 on skydiving. That's a fair bit of money that I have nothing to show for.
And I plan on spending more this summer.

I think as long as you're not hemorrhaging money, spend it how you see fit. You can't take it with you when you die anyways.

Nothing is a sure thing, maybe that one time you grab a lotto ticket it's a grand winner, you never know. I think that's what makes the lotto and interesting thing, it gives people hope, that's not something you can attachment monetary value to. Yet it can become a hook and once it becomes an addiction, well, it's now turned into something bad. Just like alcohol and what not.

As they say in BC, know your limit, play within it.

I was thinking the same but I came to the conclusion lately to tell the people what to do as less as possible.

Also, in a Free-Market society, I think they have the right to sell lotteries.

Additionally, if some people get their fun playing this type of games, why not. Maybe the problems can come when they spend all their money in it or too much.

Finally, I say that maybe the video poker that we have around everywhere in the bars in the East of Montréal is bit too much. But I just say that for now. And my main problem about this type of games and the casino is that some people may mess up their life completely with this; I save lives, I don't destroy lives.
