I just got banned from a facebook group that makes fun of vegans for saying "You can't be obese and healthy"

Is that actually a controversial thing to say?

Do you think people can be obese and healthy? Why?

I suppoost it is possible, just like you can smoke your entire life and still live 98 years, but your chances are slim

Excess body fat and lack of body fat are both detrimental to good health, the further you go from ideal either way, the worse off you are

Why is the argument always about health though? We don’t care if average sized people have unhealthily habits, we only seem to care if an overweight person does. And why should we care at all? It’s up to the individual to be healthy or not. It’s really no one else’s business how they take care of themselves unless it begins to affect other people.

You’re not wrong. Being fat isn’t individually all that important - in a general sense when a large portion of the population becomes overweight it becomes a drag on any health care system

They had junk food long before obesity became a problem, doubt it would help

But the tax would help pay the medical bills

Possibly, maybe double the tax on junk and cut it on heathy alternatives

Usually the less healthy stuff is cheaper, which doesn’t help the situation

Okay, sure. But I made the topic to discuss whether being obese can be fine.

People shouldn't smoke or do crack, either. But I wouldn't get banned for saying that.

If you joined a group for smokers and brought up how unhealthy it is, you might be banned.

Whether or not it is healthy is beyond the point. Point is, someone doesn’t deserve to feel shamed by strangers for the way they look. Some people who appear overweight have underlying condition that causes them to gain weight and it’s beyond their control. For instance hypothyroidism is pretty common in women.
Also, I’m not sure but I think someone could have a lot of subcutaneous fat but little visceral fat and therefor not really have higher risk factors for health issues associated with being obese. You could have a lot of visceral fat and not look as obese as someone with a lot of subcutaneous fat.

Some African children look like they are fat because of their bloated, protruding tummies when they are actually malnourished and hungry due to lack of food, so looks can be deceiving.

This. There will always be exceptions. There are always some people with an incredibly good genetic material, whose bodies will allow them to abuse themselves through unhealthy lifestyles, and still live long lives, but for the majority of people, being obese is related to health problems.

It's a mental thing, too. If you are mentally strong, you can live a long time even if you live a very unhealthy lifestyle.

    I didn't shame anyone tho

It was a picture where there was one figure that was an obese outline with like bits of meat, cheese, and pop in it (pro vegan... like the milk/meat is bad) and then a healthy thin outline of a person filled with vegetables

The image was not directed at anyone. It was a pro-Vegan image they were criticing because they said being thin is not healthier

How do you know if you have subcutaneous or visceral fat? (I've never heard the terms before now and just googled it)
