I’ve got some sus applicant

    Possibly a good employee but I don’t trust the references.
    So is it ok to call the places listed as previous employers?

    of course its okay. he listed em just for that purpose. u can even directly ask if they'd consider hiring this guy again. its a numbers game anyways. if he lists 3 references and 2 turn out bad, probably not a good idea to hire.

    Not really. Usually you notify your references and ask them if they are ok taking a call from your prospective employer.
    It’s just disrespectful but I guess there isn’t anything against the law about it.

    My friend used to have her friends pretend to be her references. It was her first job and they wanted references, so . . . .
