believe's canada should have universal income for all citizens as an alternative to most of our current social security systems. How come none of the PC party members seem to believe in the same thing
Which PC party? CPC is reform, not conservative, as is the UCP in Alberta, federal PCs died a long time ago, although the provincial UCP had a chance to be an actual Conservative party until the elected a hard core reformer to their leadership. The NDP isn’t much less conservative than the old Klein administration, the political spectrum is so messed up right now
But it would likely cost the government less than current social welfare programs if implemented correctly. It only sounds communist. It also eliminates the government deciding who is in need and who isn’t, people who earn enough on their own would just pay it back on their tax return.
Well no, there are people who genuinely need “free” money because they are too sick to work. But I don’t understand how the universal income thing would work.
In a truly democratic society we would be able to allocate our income tax individually towards the things we deem necessary. I don't give 30% of my money to the government so heroin addicts can afford their shit and have a safe place to shoot up.
But then heroin addicts might start shooting up in places that are dangerous to the public, and that’s not fair either. I don’t wanna step around needles just because I live in a shitty neighbourhood and take the bus.
But I live in a nice neighborhood full of asian professionals and new families so I shouldn't have to pay for them
But my poor ass doesn’t pay enough in taxes to pay for it, that’s why I live in the shitty neighbourhood in the first place
It would be a reform to the tax and social welfare system where everyone starts with however much makes sense and then people who make enough money would pay that income back in tax. Almost like reverse tax but I think it has to potential to eliminate the ability of some to take advantage of social welfare but at the same time provide to those really in need. It would also encourage people who normally wouldn’t be able to afford it to become educated and potentially land higher paying jobs than they would have been able to on our current system. You can’t qualify for welfare if you are a student I’m pretty sure. It also wouldn’t punish people who have savings which our current system does. Wikipedia has a page on it
I’m still confused as to how that would end up being cheaper for the government. As I was reading it tho James just told me he found a mall here that’s technically on reserve land. You know what that means?! No taxes!! I hope there’s a Best Buy.
I want free money. The rich are a bunch of lazy fucks and they get plenty of money from the government. I want some of that money.
It would cost a lot of get implemented but less paperwork and eligibility checking would equal less costs long term
That’s not democracy though, democracy means you choose which group of people screws you over. Hell, the US system of government is only particularly democratic, the systems they have in place are so corrupt and broken that the Koch brothers pretty much own the government, and the government itself is mostly irrelevant. Which is terrifying as a Canadian, and living in a country which is the US’s largest trading partner. All that aside, the idea of a minimum income isn’t communist - it fits with democratic socialism, which is our system of government in Canada. Fact is, there are some slimy pricks making way more than anyone deserves or will ever need, and you could put together a program like that by taxing them enough extra that they would never exprience a quality of life change, would still make more money than anyone could ever possibly need, but people in need could no longer be in need - our country prospers when everyone succeeds, as long as there are poor people, that defines us, especially when a small minority (1% or less) share of income is more than 50% of all the available cash in the country. They’re not smarter, more special or anything but lucky. And they can stay almost that lucky without an extra 2-3% of their income.
It sounds like people who don’t really neeeeed it would easily get it tho? Like people who went to school but can’t find a job after, so they have to work at McDonald’s but they don’t want to work at McDonald’s so why not take this free money instead of busting their ass at a shit job?
