The problem with English is there are so many similar words that mean completely different things - and so many completely different words that mean the same thing. It makes the language beautiful and irredeemably frustrating
Also, pick up a thesaurus, find a word you like and drill down into similar words that can be used in its place, and so on - should improve your understanding, and give you some fun words that will expand your repertoire
