Have you tried fresh ginger? peel it, slice it super thin, add a good tablespoon to a mug with a teaspoon of white sugar, let it sit for about 5 minutes (the sugar seems to suck the flavours out of the ginger), then cover with boiling water. It's one of my favourites.
I'm sure it could, but ginger is kinda stringy, when I tried to run it through a garlic press, it didn't work very well. Slices seem to do a good job of letting out the flavour without getting stringy bits in your mouth when you drink it. I suppose you could strain it too, but that's more dishes. Usually I just peel and slice an inch off the root, into the mug, in with some sugar, mash it around while I wait on the kettle.
