the far right “wave” needs to be renamed something more appropriate than Conservative

Canada used to have “Progressive Conservatism”, the idea that we can be progressive without being fiscally irresponsible, that the government should get out of business - sell off crown corporations, because the private sector could manage things like railways, airlines, utilities more effectively and in a more cost effective way. It also gives consumers a break, since the more efficient companies would provide the services cheaper

Truth was that they were solid revenue streams for the country, and while there may have been inefficiency in the way they were run, the private sector has profit motive that government doesn’t have to deal with - all they managed to do was remove stability. The train is now expensive, electricity prices are chaotic, private health has driven prices up, and taxes go up because the government loses a revenue stream - big one time windfall selling, but that gets spend and we lose the revenue stream entirely. Part of why the PC party historically ran up debt and defecit - because they cut off their own revenue streams, and failed to replace the revenue effectively

The new movement (Reform/Alliance/CPC/UPC) wants to eliminate our social safety net - programs that benefit broad parts of the population - remove universal health care, privatization of hospitals and prisons, reduce consumer protections, make Canada more like the US, where they don’t have an obligation to provide essential services to anyone - they cut veterans services, cut assistance to people with special needs, let people be homeless, and demonized the downtrodden instead of helping them get a leg up.

They’re not conservatives in the traditional Canadian sense. But most Canadian voters see the name and vote that way, ignoring that they have damaging ideas that will snowball and hurt everyone - it will eventually hit the rich as well, especially businesses - business thrives when people can afford their products, so you put more money in the hands of the poorest, they get the money anyways, give them the money directly instead, whether it be via tax cuts or other means, and business slows down because their customers have less money.

UCP, CPC primarily are not fiscal conservatives, their name is a lie to fool uninformed voters into supporting tearing down Canada into America Junior - make the rich richer at the expense of everyone else. They’re social conservatives who believe that everyone should behave and believe what they’re told, rather than pushing the idea that when your lower class starts doing well, everyone will do better, the worse off the lower class is, the higher crime is, the weaker the economy is.

A healthy, educated population will improve the lives of everyone. The current conservative movement will gradually lead us backwards into poor economy and ignorance.

Thx for the writeup Squire. I agree. I am a member of the UCP and went to 2 AGM's so far. Seems like they are going to win the next election.

The UCP base are classic conservatives as well, meaning they want fiscally conservative leadership - smaller, more effective government. Unfortunately Jason Kenney isn’t a fiscal conservative, he’s a social conservative

His main goals aren’t things he would have the power to do, because things like universal health care and abortion are constitutionally protected, but he’s a danger to Alberta’s economy and our recovery. Keep in mind the guy has never had a real job, he’s a good talker, but a really awful person.

I guess I should explain why I suspect Kenney will kill the economic recovery

One of his promises was to cut the number of government employees (not politicians) in half.

In theory I support this - the government is too big, needs to be more efficient and effective.

The problem is, you have 200,000 people who work directly for the Government of Alberta - 200,000 middle class consumers. Under his plan, 100,000 people will be looking for work, 100,000 less people will be participating in the economy. It’s only 2% of Albertans, but that’s an astoundingly effective means of shrinking the economy

1/2 of Albertans make under $30,000 per year - those 2% are not in that 1/2, they’re going to be in the 50-150k range, and unemployed. Services will be reduced for everyone, and they’re already horribly inefficient most of the time.

Ask him how putting 2% of Albertans out of work will help the economy

Arguments against increasing the minimum wage are fallacious - minimum wage employees spend all their money, out of necessity, which boosts the economy and the income of minimum wage employers (which is where most minimum wage employees spend most of their extra income). They usually see a matching net increase in sales to what they pay extra, which offsets cost increases.

Most employers don’t pay minimum wage, and are unaffected by the wage increase

Didn't end up cornering Jason Kenney but I will keep your thoughts in mind during the 2019 election.

    Eat the rich.

Strength comes from the bottom. The more solid the base, the better things are for everyone.
