Pretty sure Scientology was born because L. Ron Hubbard wrote a sci fi book and decided it sounded like something he should do to increase his income, since religions like to make free money from brainwashed followers, and he wanted his slice of the pie too

 

I thought that someone bet him that he couldn't create a religion that would take off and so he created Scientology, it took off, and he collected his winnings which was probably just bragging rights, lol.
